Mathematics Academic Standards

The mathematics standards compel us to make mathematics relevant to students by moving beyond mere answer getting to doing the work of mathematicians. The standards emphasize the development of students’ abilities to use mathematics to represent their lived experiences and to simplify and explain complex phenomena.

Implementing and Supporting the Standards

CDE Implementation Modules

CDE recommends that schools and districts take a patient, planned approach to implementing the 2020 Colorado Academic Standards. The two-year transition period between the adoption of these standards in 2018 and their implementation in the 2020-2021 school year offers Colorado educators the opportunity to give standards implementation the full attention it deserves.

To assist in these efforts, the Office of Standards and Instructional support is providing a series of professional learning modules to help school leaders facilitate standards implementation efforts with their staffs. The first phase of modules focuses on disciplinary and standards literacy, which establishes a foundation for understanding the relationship between disciplinary content and the educational purposes of standards. The second phase of modules focus on curriculum and resource alignment and ends with goal-setting for district- and school-level curricular changes. The final phase of modules will focus on connecting the standards to instructional practices and strategies.

Understanding the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics

Colorado's State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) in 2010, and reaffirmed that adoption with their approval of revisions to the standards in 2018. However, the CCSSM are only a part of Colorado's mathematics standards, as Colorado is required to have a more robust document that supports the integration of the Colorado Essential Skills. Still, the CCSSM (with some edits) form the basis of Colorado's Grade Level Expectations and Evidence Outcomes, and therefore some CCSSM materials can be helpful when making sense of Colorado's math standards.

  • The Illustrative Mathematics project connects mathematical tasks to each of the standards. Bill McCallum, a lead writer of the Common Core State Standards, helped create the site to show the range and types of mathematical work the standards are designed to foster in students.
  • The Progressions Documents for the Common Core Math Standards describe the progression of topics across grade levels, as informed by research on children's cognitive development and the logical structure of mathematics. The project is headed by the lead writers of the Common Core State Standards and the documents are written and reviewed by a panel of nationally recognized experts in mathematics and mathematics education.
  • The Coherence Map from Student Achievement Partners (SAP) shows connections between Common Core State Standards in an interactive map. SAP's website, Achieve the Core contains many other resources related to professional learning, planning and reflection, and classroom resources designed to support the Common Core State Standards. SAP was founded by David Coleman and Jason Zimba, two of the lead writers of the Common Core State Standards.

Family and Community Guides to the 2010 Mathematics Standards

In partnership with the Colorado PTA, family and community guides to the Colorado Academic Standards (in English and Spanish) were created to help families and communities across Colorado better understand the goals and outcomes of the 2009/2010 Colorado Academic Standards. The guides describe the “big picture” purpose of the standards, as roadmaps to help ensure that all Colorado students graduate ready for life, college, and careers. They also provide overviews of the learning expectations for each of the ten content areas of the standards and offer examples of educational experiences that students may engage in, and that families could support, during the school year.
