First Time Applicant (Initial)
An Initial License shall be valid for three years from the date of issuance and may be renewed. Click here if you hold a license in another state.
Please be aware that all applicants must pass a criminal background check that is based upon submission of fingerprints to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation prior to being issued a Colorado license.
Applicants participating in an exchange educator program (under a J1 visa) may submit an application for an Educator Exchange Interim Authorization or, if they qualify for a full teacher license, apply for a Colorado teacher license.

An initial teaching license may be issued to applicants who have completed an approved teacher preparation program and who meet the specific Colorado license requirements. For applicants who completed an out-of-state alternative teaching program: You are required to submit an official letter signed by the state department of education of the state in which the program is approved. This letter must confirm your completion of the approved program and the requirements for program completion.

Initial License Application - Special Services Provider |

An initial special services license may be issued to an applicant who has completed an approved special services preparation program and who meets the Colorado license requirements specific to the license/endorsement requested. State-approved programs include those provided by accepted, regionally accredited colleges and universities.

Initial License Application - Principal |

An initial principal license may be issued to an applicant who has completed an approved principal preparation program and who meets the Colorado requirements for licensure, including three or more years of licensed, full-time, successful experience working as a professional in a public or non-public elementary or secondary school in this state or another state. For applicants who completed an out-of-state alternative principal program: You are required to submit an official letter signed by the state department of education of the state in which the program is approved. This letter must confirm your completion of the approved program and the requirements for program completion. This application is for principals and other school- or building-level leaders. It is not for superintendents or other district-level leaders. |

Initial License Application - Administrator |

An initial license for an administrator (e.g. superintendent), director of special education or director of gifted education may be issued to an applicant who has completed an approved program for the requested administrator endorsement, and who meets the Colorado license requirements specific to the license. Please note: This application is not for principals or other school- or building-level leaders. |
