Goals & Standards - Applying Operations to Solve Word Problems
Mathematical Goals
This toolkit will address when to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to solve real-word problems. This lesson will help you assess how well students understand the concepts of (4.OA.A.3):
-
Operations & Algebraic Thinking: Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.
-
Computation with whole numbers, interpreting a remainder, solving a multi-step problem in a real-world context
-
Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted.
-
Represent problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.

Mathematical Practice Standards
Math practice standards are thinking strategies for developing skills and habits in math learning. They focus on concepts to cultivate proficiency and prepare students for real-world applications. “These practices rest on important ‘processes and proficiencies’ with longstanding importance in mathematics education.” The Math Practices describe ways in which students ought to engage with the content as they grow in their mathematical expertise.

This lesson relates to the following Standards for Mathematical Practice (MP)
- MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
- MP2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively
- MP4: Model with mathematics
- MP7: Look for and make use of the structure
