Describe Fractions and Place Fractions on a Number Line - Grade 3

Mathematical Goals

This toolkit will address developing and understanding fractions. This lesson will help you assess how well students understand the concepts of (3.NF.A.1 and 3.NF.A.2):

 

  • Fractions: develop an understanding of fractions as numbers.
  • Describe a fraction (1/b) as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction (a/b) as the quantity formed by a parts of size (1/b). 
  • Describe a fraction as a number on the number line.
  • Represent fractions on a number line diagram.

“These practices rest on important ‘processes and proficiencies’ with longstanding importance in mathematics education.” The Math Practices describe ways in which students ought to engage with the content as they grow in their mathematical expertise.
