Real-World Applications and Project Ideas

Once students have mastered the skill in this toolkit, they can try out these relevant activities.

These are also great ideas for students who can do the math work above but struggle with explaining it.

Lastly, it is effective to have students solidify their understanding by doing hands-on and real-world applications.

  1. Building with Blocks (ask students to build structures using a certain number of blocks; encourage counting as they build).
  2. Snack Time (during snack time, have students count the number of snacks before and during eating them).
  3. Number Hunt (provide students with a list of numbers to find; students can travel around the room, count, and record/draw what they find).
  4. Counting Steps (have students count their steps from one location to another; can record and compare these numbers).
  5. Counting Collections (ask students to bring in and share their collections, have them count their collections and share how they counted).
