Directions:

  1. Give student/pairs their own set of Number Cards (0-10).
  2. Give student/pairs their own set of Dice Flashcards with pictures of dice values on them.
  3. Students will count dot dice on the picture cards and match them with the corresponding number card.
    1. Please note, that there are more than ten dot dice cards to allow for multiple practices.
  4. The students should discuss with each other why they matched the numbers and ten frames they did. They can also explain to the facilitator.
  5. Extension: students can put them in order from zero to ten.

Decorative question mark:

Why are students doing this/what are they getting out of it?

This activity allows students an opportunity to apply the rote skill of counting to a different manipulative as a mini-application practice.

  1. Use Progress Monitoring: Collaborative Activity #2
  2. Using the dice flashcards, show the student(s) one card at a time.  Ask students to tell you verbally what number the die represents.
  3. Next, show two dice and ask students to tell you verbally what number the dice represent.  Repeat this process until students have had the opportunity to demonstrate numbers 1-10.
  4. Take note of which numbers they can identify.
  5. Take note of which numbers they are not able to identify.
  6. To move forward, you will want students to be able to correctly match the die to the number at least half of the time.
