Goals & Standards - Identify and Use Proportional Relationships

Grade Band 6-8. Identify and Use Proportional Relationships (Grade 7)

Mathematical Goals

This toolkit will address common misconceptions related to the identification and use of proportional relationships using various representations - tables, graphs, equations, and stories. This lesson will help you assess how well students understand the concepts of (7.RP.A.2):

  • Ratios & Proportional Relationships: Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

  • Identify and represent proportional relationships between quantities.
  • Determine whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship
  • Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships.
  • Represent proportional relationships by equations.
  • Explain what a point (x,y) on the graph of a proportional relationship means in terms of the situation, with special attention to the points (0,0) and (1,r) where r is the unit rate.

Mathematical Practice Standards

Mathematical Practice Standards are thinking strategies for developing skills and habits in math learning. They focus on concepts to cultivate proficiency and prepare students for real-world applications. "These practices rest on important ‘processes and proficiencies’ with longstanding importance in mathematics education."

The Math Practices describe ways in which students ought to engage with the content as they grow in their mathematical expertise. Check out these videos to learn more:

This lesson relates to the following Standards for Mathematical Practice (MP)

  • MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
  • MP4: Model with mathematics
  • MP5: Use appropriate tools strategically
  • MP6: Attend to precision
  • MP7: Look for and make use of the structure
