Progression of Skills - Identify and Use Proportional Relationships

Grade Band 6-8. Identify and Use Proportional Relationships (Grade 7)

Progression of Skills Related to this Toolkit

Below we explain the skill(s) that would come before this lesson and the skill(s) that would come after the student has mastered the content of this lesson.

Decorative question mark:

Why is this important?

After

Before this lesson:

Students should be fluent in calculating and representing equivalent ratios and graphing in the coordinate plane. For example, if a student can complete both the Equivalent Ratios Fluency Check (Answers) and

Coordinate Graphing Fluency Check (Answers) with little to no help and with ease, they are ready for this toolkit lesson.

Students Do:

Determine how much yellow paint to mix with red paint to create a specific shade of orange.

This Toolkit Lesson:

Focuses on deciding if two quantities are in a proportional relationship using tables and graphs, identifying the constant of proportionality from a table, graph, equation, diagram, or story, and writing equations for proportional relationships.

Students Do:

Create a table or graph to track their exercise over time for completing 50 pushups each day. Write an equation to know how many total pushups they’ll have completed after any number of days.

After this lesson:

Students can use proportional reasoning to solve problems involving percentages such as calculating prices with discounts, markups, tips, or taxes.

Students Do:

Calculate the sales price for a discounted item by multiplying the original price by 100% minus the discount.
