Before this lesson:

Students should be fluent in the concept of division. If a student can complete this Fluency of Arrays Practice activity with little to no help,  they are ready for this toolkit. To use this activity, cut out the arrays and the division sentences. Students match the array with the sentence.

Students Do:

Adjust baking measurements to account for a certain number of people who are eating.  Focus: *MP4: Modeling

 

This Toolkit Lesson:

focuses on common misconceptions related to the division of fractions. 

 

Students Do:

Painting a wall and figuring out how many gallons are needed per square inch/foot. 

 

After this lesson:

Students will have the foundational knowledge to tackle division problems involving fractions. The most likely skill they will attempt next is the division of mixed fractions.

 

Students Do:

 Planning a road trip, and the car's fuel efficiency is calculated in terms of miles per gallon to determine the total distance traveled and the total amount of fuel the car's tank can hold.
