Before the Lesson

  • Students complete the Writing a Novel task independently to activate background knowledge about equivalent ratios.
  • Collaboration strategies are used to engage students and share their current understanding by discussing connections with strategies and approaches.

During the Lesson

  • Students engage in learning the new skill, finding patterns, and choosing challenging activities through independent, partner, and whole group collaboration.
  • Facilitator and Students share responsibility by modeling and practicing learning independently or in pairs writing the equations for proportional relationships.

After the Lesson

  • Students work independently to complete the assessment, Writing a Novel Revisited.

Before the Lesson

  • Student completes the Writing a Novel task independently as an introduction to the lesson.
  • Student and facilitator review the activity together so that they can discuss strategies and approaches. Since this may be new for the student, guiding this conversation and brainstorming can be helpful.

During the Lesson

Lesson Guide - Identify and Use Proportional Relationships

  • Students notice and wonder about the patterns and choose their challenge to independently complete a Proportional or Not Card Sort.
  • Support the Student by discussing until you agree on the results.

After the Lesson

  • Student works independently to complete the assessment, Writing a Novel Revisited.

A Note About Timing

This toolkit is unique in that it is divided into multiple sessions. The sessions allow the facilitator and students to slow down and spend quality time in each session to explore the skills and concepts while having enough time to apply and eventually master the skills. Since these lessons and skills are challenging, slowing down the pace of the toolkit and practicing it in sessions will support students' engagement, attention span, and ultimate learning. If you find the session pacing still too long or too quick for your student(s), feel free to slow down even more and create additional sessions for the individual lessons.

There is a suggestion for session breaks throughout the toolkit. However, you know your student(s) best and know the amount of time you have to help them. Feel free to take a break after every activity or chunk activities together in the amount of time you have. Timings are approximate and will depend on the needs of the student.
