Session 3 - Division of Fractions

Grade Band 6-8: Division of Fractions

Questions to lead the discussion of similarities and differences:

Focus: *MP4:  Modeling and MP6: Attend to Precision

What did Chris do well?

Sample answer: Chris drew clear pictures of the 5 cups and divided them well into groups of ¾.

What could Chris do better next time?

Sample answer: Chris mistakenly said that there was ½ left over. This is incorrect because there are 2 of 3 parts left over, not ½ left over, so it would be 6 full containers and 2/3 of a container left.

What did Jo do well?

Sample answer: Jo explained that 5 cups were divided into ¾ sized containers. Jo followed the algorithm and solved the answer that there were 6 full containers and 2/3 of another container.

What could Jo do better next time?

Sample answer: Jo could explain why converting 20/3 to 6 2/3 is necessary in this situation (that we’re talking about whole containers).
