Real-World Applications and Project Ideas

Once students have mastered the skill in this toolkit, they can try out these relevant activities.

These are also great ideas for students who can do the math work above but struggle with explaining it.

Lastly, it is effective to have students solidify their understanding by doing hands-on and real-world applications.

  • Baking: Find your favorite recipe and only make half (or one-third) of a batch.
  • Art: Scale down a drawing so it will fit in an 11x14-inch frame. 
  • Real Estate: How many ⅕  acre parcels could you divide a ¾ acre parcel into?
  • Painting: You need to paint yo-yos to sell at the craft fair. Each yo-yo takes half a cup (1/32 of a gallon) to paint. You have 5/8 of a gallon of paint. If you want to use all your paint, how many yo-yos can you paint?
