Non-classroom

Setting: One-on-One

Before the Lesson

  • The facilitator should review the Background Knowledge of this unit to ensure familiarity with the content and be able to help facilitate discussion.
  • Students work individually on a Pre-Lesson Knowledge check that is designed for students to practice with a small data set.

During the Lesson

  • Students will work collaboratively on several activities. With each activity, there should be a check-in with the teacher and progress monitoring before moving along to the next activity. It is recommended that students share ideas throughout both with their partners/groups and with the teacher.

After the Lesson

  • Students should work collaboratively and the teacher should ensure the students understand their answers.
  • If desired students can complete additional real-world application problems either by themselves or with partners or groups.

Before the Lesson

  • The facilitator should review the Background Knowledge of this unit to ensure familiarity with the content needed to help the student.
  • Observe and talk with the student on the small data set in the Pre-Lesson Knowledge check about the repeated patterns of finding an average.

During the Lesson

  • The student will work together with the facilitator on several activities. There should be progress monitoring and the facilitator should ensure the student understands the concepts in each activity before moving along to the next activity.
  • The last section of the toolkit provides sources for more data sets. If the student is struggling or uninterested in the data sets used, we encourage them to select something they are interested in.

After the Lesson

A Note About Timing

This toolkit has several components and activities. The activities in this toolkit can be divided up over several days and can be completed at any time. There is a suggestion for breaks throughout the toolkit. However, you know your student(s) best and know the amount of time you have to help them. Feel free to take a break after every activity or chunk activities together in the amount of time you have. Timings are approximate and will depend on the needs of the student.
