The Special Milk Program (SMP) is an underutilized program that provides milk to children in public or nonprofit schools, residential child care institutions, and camps that do not participate in any other Federal child nutrition meal service program or any child at a participating school or half-day pre-kindergarten program can receive milk through the Special Milk Program. Administered by the Colorado Department of Education Office of School Nutrition, reimbursement is provided from the U.S Department of Agriculture for each half pint of milk served.

How to Apply
Schools that are interested in applying for the Special Milk Program will submit their application during the annual renewal of applications, online. During the renewal application the district will select Special Milk Program for those schools that will be participating in the Special Milk Program.
Camps and institutions that are interested in applying for the Special Milk Program need to complete the Non-Pricing Agreement and Policy Statement and submit to the Colorado Department of Education Office of School Nutrition.

Free and Reduced Price and/or Special Milk Program - Public Release
Annually, school food authorities (SFAs) are required to provide a public release of the Free and Reduced Price Meals Policy and/or the Special Milk Program Policy that is published at the district level. To meet this annual requirement for Colorado SFAs, the CDE Office of School Nutrition will be publishing a state-wide public release on July 5, 2017. This state-wide public release will include all sites participating in the National School Lunch Program and/or the Special Milk Program. As a best practice, Colorado SFAs can publish the public release locally, but this will no longer be required.
