Relevant and Engaging Learning Opportunities: Dropout Prevention Framework
Overview
Foundational practices are focused on proactive systems-level efforts to engage students fully in learning. Foundational practices provide the groundwork for the implementation of the four dropout prevention strategies and are important structures to engage students. They are built off of and align to school improvement and student success efforts in Colorado including Colorado’s Four Domains of Rapid School Improvement; Multi-Tiered System of Supports; Landscape of Well-Being (coming soon); and Family, School, and Community Partnerships.

Relevant and engaging learning opportunities ensure students see the value and applicability of what they are learning, are challenged with appropriately rigorous materials, and can identify how it connects to their lives and future goals. Instructional design that prioritizes student-centered learning experiences results in relevant and engaging lessons, strengthened relationships, and the creation of a sense of community in the classroom.

Implementation Guides
Active Learning: The Institute for Learning and Teaching at Colorado State University provides a variety of resources related to instructional strategies. Active Learning strategies engage students through intentional opportunities for students to interact with the content and their peers.
Cognitive Demand: The Hess Cognitive Rigor Matrices combine Bloom’s Taxonomy with Webb’s Depth of Knowledge to provide a framework for educators to guide the development of learning experiences aligned with the demand of grade-level standards.
Career and Technical Education: CDE’s Postsecondary Workforce Readiness team partners with Colorado Community College System (CCCS) to provide support and resources for K-12 CTE programs.
Work based learning: Work-based learning encompasses a variety of strategies to offer learners experiential opportunities to explore potential careers.
