Re-engagement of Out-of-School Youth
Student re-engagement, as defined in Colorado Revised Statutes, means a student re-enrolls in school after dropping out prior to completion. Student re-engagement can be facilitated through a local education provider’s use of evidence- or research-based strategies to reach out to students who have dropped out of school and to assist them in transitioning back into school and obtaining a high school diploma or certificate of completion.
The re-engagement process involves outreach, re-enrollment and inventions to support educational persistence of out-of-school youth.
Why Re-engage Out of School Youth?
Without a diploma, many out-of-school youth are pushed out of the labor market, impacting the lives of individuals as well as the neighborhoods, communities, and the economy as a whole.
Connecting out-of-school youth to quality educational pathways leads to high school completion, future employment, growth, and success on the individual and community level.
Outreach to Out-of-School Youth
Out-of-school youth are often unaware and/or unable to access existing services. Often, outreach to this population of youth requires an advocate to re-engage them in education and help them access needed services. Without completing high school or an equivalent, these youth risk missing out on gaining crucial life, academic, and vocational skills needed to be successful in life and connecting to the communities in which they live.
