CDE Field Trips 4/7/25: Commissioner's Chat with Rangely Superintendent

Posted 04/07/2025 - 4:56pm

In the latest Commissioner's Chat Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova talked with Rangely School District Superintendent Matt Scoggins and Parkview Elementary Principal Carlene Cantrell about attendance and what is driving student success in the small rural school district on Colorado's western border.

Superintendent Scoggins and Principal  Cantrell described how shifting to a positive, relationship-based approach has helped improve attendance. “When students walk in, we say, ‘We’re so glad you’re here,’” Cantrell shared. The district also partners with families through meetings, attendance contracts, and even home visits when needed.

With a four-day school week, each day matters even more. The district uses data to monitor attendance and keeps the message consistent across K–12. At the secondary level, hands-on learning—like welding, robotics, and trades exposure—keeps students engaged and connected to real-world opportunities.

To address teacher shortages, Rangely has grown its own staff through alternative licensure and welcomed international teachers. Affordable district-owned housing further supports recruitment.

Cordova praised their efforts, calling Rangely a model for how rural schools can lead with care, creativity, and community
