About the School Nurse Workforce Grant

CDC’s COVID-19 Public Health Workforce Supplemental Funding provided a total of approximately $8.1 million in funding to increase the capacity of the school nurse workforce through the retention and recruitment of qualified school nurses.

  • During the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years, the Colorado Department of Education, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, administered the School Nurse Workforce Grant program to 54 Colorado Local Education Providers (LEPs).
  • In the 2023-24 school year, grantees who had not expended their full awards and opted-in had funding extended.  Funds to retain school nurses were also distributed in 2023-2024 to 31 LEPs through the School Nurse Professional Development Grant.
  • In the 2025-25 school year, funds that had not been used during previous grant cycles were distributed to 71 LEPs through the School Nurse Workforce Retention Grant.

2024-2025 School Nurse Workforce Retention Grant

Overview

The School Nurse Workforce Retention Grant exists to build and maintain the capacity to support public health priorities derived from COVID-19 and to retain school nurses as a critical part of the public health infrastructure. Approximately $759,500 was awarded for retention bonuses of up to $2,000 per Registered Nurse currently employed by the school, inclusive of any benefit costs.  These bonuses will support the retention of 405 Colorado School Nurses in 71 Local Education Providers. Funds requested in applications of up to $2,500 per school nurse exceeded the funds available; in order to support as many districts, schools, and students as possible, the award amounts were reduced from requested amounts by 20%, to a maximum of $2,000 per nurse.

Allowable services or activities include: Retention bonuses for Registered Nurses currently employed as a K-12 school nurse, limited to salaries and benefits.

  • Recipients of funds shall hold registered nurse (RN) licensure.
  • Funds may not be used to supplant funding from other federal sources or matching on other federal awards.
  • It is the district’s responsibility to ensure nurses employed by one or more districts may only receive retention bonuses from one district.
  • Funding may not be used for food.
  • This is a federal grant that requires a request for reimbursement.
  • Indirect costs are not allowable.
