Homeless Education Data

The Colorado Department of Education collects educational data as mandated by the U.S. Department of Education.  Complete Colorado Education Statistics can be found on the Education Statistics Webpage.

Colorado collects and reports data through two collections in relation to a student’s status as McKinney-Vento eligible, or homeless, under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.  Pupil Membership collection, or October Count, is a point-in-time collection reflecting the number of students experiencing homelessness at that point in the school year.  The Student End of Year Collection captures the number of students experiencing homelessness over the entirety of the school year.  The data disaggregated by school districts and local education agencies reflects duplicated numbers of students who may have been counted and served by several districts due to their high mobility. The state-level totals eliminates duplicates and reflects a student identified as homeless during the course of the school year only once.

Data suppression applies to protect student privacy.  More information on data suppression requirements for Student End of Year Collection can be found here

A data visual based on Student End-of-Year data for the 2022-23 school year summarizes and spotlights trends in homeless education data.

For District Data Respondents

School district and local education agency data respondents are required to report the number of students identified as McKinney-Vento eligible according to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act through the Student End-of-Year Collection July 1 - June 30 of each school year.  The following resources are designed to support McKinney-Vento District Liaisons and School District Data respondents in tracking and reporting accurate data.
