communities. Children?s Kiva Montessori Charter School (KM) serves K-8 students, ages 5-14, through multi-aged classrooms guided by Montessori principles. Our structure includes a Kindergarten classroom, two Lower Elementary classrooms for ages 6-9 (grades 1-3), three Upper Elementary classrooms for ages 10-12 (grades 4-6), and two Middle School classrooms for ages 13-14 (grades 7 & 8). We nurture academic excellence and holistic child development while promoting responsibility, initiative, choice, and independence. KM is an autonomous school governed by a volunteer Board of Directors accountable to the Colorado Department of Education, as well as state and federal authorities. Our authorizer is the Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 School District (District). While we collaborate with Re-1 on larger logistical matters, KM is independently governed by our volunteer Board. We operate under a renewable contract with Re-1 and are solely responsible for our budget, curriculum, teacher training, and Colorado Department of Education accreditation. As a school of choice, we prioritize our accountability to the parents and students who choose to attend. KM holds memberships in local and national organizations, including the Colorado League of Charter Schools, the American Montessori Society, and the Colorado Montessori Association. Children's Kiva Montessori Charter School employs Montessori instructional methods to create an enriching learning environment for students, faculty, and parents. We cultivate positive relationships with families, viewing parents as advocates who understand their children's unique challenges and successes. We work together with families to enhance engagement, participation, and volunteerism. Our Montessori approach includes a global perspective and real-world connections, enabling rigorous learning experiences while meeting state and federal accountability standards. We currently adopt state-approved curricula, including EL reading and language arts, supplemented with Orton Gillingham and Heggerty interventions, as well as Eureka Math2 for foundational math, enhanced with iReady interventions. Operating four days a week, we exceed state requirements for instructional hours with 1,090 hours offered.
