About Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 (2035)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Montezuma-Cortez RE-1

2024-2025

Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 school district is located in Cortez, Colorado roughly 40 miles from the Four Corners of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. The geographic location provides a dynamic background of culture and history and brings many walks of life together in one school district. MCSD is home to roughly 2500 students from grades K through 12 with diverse backgrounds ranging from indigenous people from local tribal lands to local farmers and ranchers that have been in the area for many … generations. Likewise, the district serves many students of Latino or Hispanic descent along with several eastern Asian cultures as well. This provides a strong and diverse educational culture where to mountains meet the desert. At this time MCSD is experiencing a period of change and growth. Over the past 2 years, with new leadership, the district has placed a priority on foundational components of pedagogy and establishing (or reestablishing) systems to support quality teaching. This priority emphasizes the need to base district and instructional decisions upon student data and performance with the goal of improving student outcomes. A central resource to this work has been based upon Mike Schmoker's book Results Now 2.0 that explores opportunities to make improvements in education along with the guiding consultation of education reform advocate Airick Journey Crabill author of Great on Their Behalf . These two resources in conjunction with support from CDE's "Turnaround" team have provided a foundational stepping stone from which MCSD began this reformative journey. During this period of growth, the district has seen positive movement resulting in vastly improved performance on state ratings for the district and district schools. Schools that have traditionally struggled over long periods of time and faced potentially dire consequences have changed the narrative and have become performance schools with emergent and strengthening cultures driven by data. Bolstered by these successes the district continues to strive for improvement by refining data driven systems, improving tier 1 instruction, and hiring and retaining high quality educators and staff.
