About Primero Reorganized 2 (1590)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Primero Reorganized 2

2025-2026

Primero School District is a small Southern Colorado rural district located 17 miles west of Trinidad. The district is a PK-12th grade school with a growing population (estimated 216 students for 2025-26 down from 235 students in 2023-24). The district boasts small class sizes as an academic advantage. About 30% of the students have been identified as free/reduced lunch. This number remains steady from the previous year although it is expected to increase as inflation increases. Almost 60% of th… e student population is out of district but choose to attend Primero due to small class sizes, post secondary options offered, and continued focus on better academic achievement. In recent years, the district has had some teacher turnover, and academic growth has been strong in all content areas. However, Math (specifically Math Growth) continues to be the focus as this area has kept Primero from becoming a School of Distinction. A couple of items have come up as possible root causes: 1. In 2023, the district was able to secure a replacement that is a highly qualified teacher in Math; however this led to a disruption of established routines and relationships. The student-teacher rapport has not been established but continues to get stronger over the past two years. Curriculum and pacing and alignment has not been well established by new teacher which has led to loss of continuity established by previous teacher. 2. A math curriculum is in place along with pacing maps followed by the teachers. The math department is continuing to follow a curriculum as well as a scope of sequence for math courses. New resources were purchased for the 2020-21 school year in both the elementary and secondary. The Saxon Math program in play for over a decade was replaced by Envision Math for the elementary and Big Ideas Math for the secondary. An updated Improvement Plan was developed with the cooperation of the district school board and accountability committee.
