About Werner Elementary School (9380)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Werner Elementary School

2025-2026

History and Culture Werner Elementary School, opened in 1987, is named after Gail Werner, a long-time PSD teacher and principal. The school?s distinctive design earned national awards and served as a model for several other PSD elementary schools. Lifelong learning is supported through a developmentally based academic program. Along with the Poudre School District priorities in literacy, mental health and belonging, and students graduating with options, the Werner community is committed to the s… ocial, emotional, physical, and academic growth of children. Our mission is to ?Educate and inspire every child, every day?.   Academics and Activities In 2008, Werner received the prestigious Blue Ribbon Award from the U.S. Department of Education. It has also been recognized as a John Irwin School of Excellence and received the Governor's Distinguished Improvement Award from the Colorado Department of Education. Werner Elementary offers a challenging curriculum with a literacy-based program and an integrated curriculum emphasizing research and critical thinking. Werner?s gifted education and Integrated Services programs help students reach their individual learning potential. Along with Poudre School District we are committed to the systemic implementation of the Colorado Multi-Tiered System of Supports (COMTSS) as the foundation for achieving equitable academic, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes for all students. Anchored in the five essential components of Colorado?s MTSS framework?team-driven shared leadership, data-based problem solving and decision-making, layered continuum of supports, evidence-based instruction/intervention, and universal screening and progress monitoring. Students enjoy various enrichment activities, including choir, running club, student leadership, chess, Odyssey of the Mind, Spanish Club, and Battle of the Books.   School Improvement Efforts Over recent years, the Werner staff has been working on enhancing their skills in teaching literacy and building stronger teams (collective efficacy) to support all students. Staff have also focused on adopting and implementing revised CAS (Colorado Academic Standards) and a new literacy curriculum, as well as culturally responsive teaching strategies, to foster a more inclusive culture. We are firm believers that collaboration between teachers and partnerships with families is key.
