Sunnyside Elementary School is a small, rural Title I school within the Durango School District, serving a diverse community of learners from preschool through fifth grade. We cultivate a close-knit, family-like environment where a developmentally appropriate curriculum, aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards, forms the foundation of our instructional approach. Our academic program is built on evidence-based practices designed for student engagement. Literacy instruction is grounded in the…
Science of Reading using the Benchmark Workshop curriculum, while our mathematics program, Contexts for Learning Mathematics (CFLM) , challenges students to think critically and solve problems within meaningful, real-world contexts. We are expanding our use of project-based learning units at every grade level and utilize standards-based discovery centers to deepen understanding in science and social studies in Kindergarten. To support all learners, we explicitly teach Thinking Maps to enhance comprehension and academic language, and we intentionally align all instruction with the competencies and dispositions of the Durango Schools' Portrait of a Graduate. Beyond the core curriculum, Sunnyside offers a variety of enrichment opportunities that support the whole child. Our fifth-grade students dive into STEM by participating in Lego League, and technology is integrated across all grade levels through tools like Kaibots, Book Creator, and coding. Our art and music programs intentionally reinforce core math and literacy concepts, creating a rich, interdisciplinary experience. To ensure a positive and predictable learning environment for all, we have implemented a school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework, utilizing strategies like CHAMPS to clearly define behavioral expectations. We believe a strong partnership between school and home is essential for student success. Our active PTA (SIPTA) is a vital part of our school, and we strengthen our community bonds through traditions like two annual all-school field trips. We host family engagement events, including a Literacy Night and a Math Night that integrates Social-Emotional Learning, to empower parents as partners in their child's education. Our library further fosters a love of reading through creative initiatives such as our "Books and Blankets" one-book-one-school program, Rock 'n' Read, and the annual Edible Books festival. These efforts all support our core mission: to foster an interdependent community of caring relationships, successful habits of mind, and high expectations. Through this, we ensure every child becomes a confident, curious, and engaged thinker, prepared to thrive regardless of race, ethnicity, or culture.
