About Canon Exploratory School (7950)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Canon Exploratory School

2024-2025

Cañon Exploratory is a K-8 school that opened twelve years ago on the former Skyline Elementary site when the Madison Exploratory model expanded from three classrooms into the full school we are now. We?re unique in that we are rooted in Glasser?s Choice Theory, Gardner?s Multiple Intelligences, multi-age classrooms and learning opportunities, and exploratory learning.  CES is made up of five communities this year: Scouts (kindergarteners), Trailblazers (middle school), Voyagers, Adventurers, an… d Wanderers (each 1st-6th). Our 1st-6th grade classrooms are multi-age. First/Second, Third/Fourth, and Fifth/Sixth grades are combined in the classroom.  The Choice Theory philosophy is the foundation of our school culture. Through this, we work with students to identify the needs that fuel the choices they make and connect those choices to the consequences, positive or negative, that result. We work together to understand how the choices we make help or hurt our relationships and identify when we are using caring habits or deadly habits in our interactions with one-another.  Through exploratory learning, we offer students opportunities to explore their ?smarts.? These may be outside of the traditional classroom learning opportunities offered.  We do this by purposefully integrating multiple intelligences into our instruction and explorations. Communities join together weekly to explore the multiple intelligences. Additionally, students work on explorations through project-based learning in a variety of formats ranging from individual passion projects to group projects based on current content learning. Our teachers kick off each quarter with a conceptual unit that is brought to life with off campus field trips, virtual field trips, guest speakers, and explorations in addition to daily instructional practices.  Since we believe, ?Together We Make a Difference,? students frequently work with buddies. Older students are paired with younger students in a variety of ways. Buddies develop rapport and unity in their relationships. One will often find littles playing with their big buddies or sitting with them at lunch. Our big buddies show compassion and kindness to their little buddies.  Another component of our motto, ?Together We Make a Difference,? is found in our school, family, and community relationships. We have an active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) supporting the instructional needs of staff. PTO supplements our field trips, technology purchases, supplemental teaching needs, and organizes our fundraisers.  Finally, we have an Advisory council that is student-run. This year they are taking the lead in organizing a drive for toiletries for students who are in foster care. In addition, this year we have implemented multiple student-led clubs allowing students to pursue passions and find friends with common interests after school. The advisory students oversee this process to assist with going through proposals and determining which clubs could be combined and which clubs we need more information from so that they can be successful.
