About Buena Vista Elementary School (1126)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Buena Vista Elementary School

2025-2026

Buena Vista is a public Montessori School on the westside of Colorado Springs, serving 267 students from age 3 through 5th grade. All students attend on a Choice Permit; our staff and families form a tight-knit community in which every child is known and nurtured. We are proud to be Accredited with Distinction by the Colorado Department of Education for academic achievement and growth and maintain a Performance rating on state assessments. The class composition at Buena Vista is based on the Mont… essori model of multi-age classrooms; therefore, the Primary level is Preschool 3 and 4 year olds and Kindergarten. The Lower Elementary classes are 1st -3rd grade students. Our final level, Upper Elementary, is 4th and 5th grade students. Teachers at Buena Vista must be certified teachers, or enrolled in alternative licensure programming to meet the Colorado Department of Education requirements. At this time, all classroom teachers have a teaching certification. The Montessori model training is coursework completed in addition to teacher licensure that grows teacher expertise in working within the model. Teacher retention is high, which means students have access to a highly experienced staff. Students who are identified as reading below grade level receive supplemental small group reading instruction during the school day from 2 highly experienced educators. After school tutoring is also offered to assist with reading and math skill growth. Students needing extra support or who could use an extra challenge are grouped by skill level for additional small group instruction with a certified tutor. Instructional services for students in special education include accommodation and modification in the general education classroom with support by certified or classified special education staff. Pull-out, direct instruction in an individual or small group setting for language arts and math is also provided by the special education staff to meet student individual learning needs as specified in their individual education plan (IEP). In the 2023-2024 school year we added an Instructional Leadership Team to our data analysis and Professional Learning Community process. This team helped us to identify large scale trends in data and observations. This information then drove additional conversations and implementation occurring in team PLC?s. We have a part time Teacher Learning Coach, part time Montessori coordinator to provide academic support and coaching cycles. In 2024- 2025 we also added an Elementary Specialist who leads the Student Support Team in building and implementing individual plans for students needing additional supports. Parent involvement at Buena Vista events is high overall. In addition to standing room only events like concerts, student dance performances, and the musical, parent participation in the 5E survey was 30%. Parent-Teacher Conferences are held in October; Buena Vista teachers work to ensure 100% participation. To accommodate families, teachers provide day and evening conferences by flexing their schedules. This year 98% of parents participated in conferences about their student?s progress. Communication is a vital component of building community at Buena Vista. We send weekly newsletters to families from the front office in addition to individual class communications from teachers. At Buena Vista We: Emphasize the development of the whole child.  Implement a rigorous academic curriculum.  Teach standards in the context of individual interests and needs.  Allow students to independently explore concepts using specially designed, hands-on materials.  Support peer learning and leadership through multi-age classrooms.  Foster concentration through uninterrupted work periods.  Develop human beings who think critically, work collaboratively, and act boldly.  We also provide various "going out" activities, after school activities, and fun family events.   We would love to have you join our Buena Vista family and to have the opportunity to Free your Child?s Potential!
