A MESSAGE FROM:

Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning

2024-2025

AcademyACL is a District 11 Charter School of Choice focusing on gifted education in west-central Colorado Springs, offering open enrollment without testing requirements. The school opened in August 2010 with 175 kindergarten through eighth-grade students and has grown to serve roughly 300 students from around the Pikes Peak Region, including Pueblo, Divide, Monument, and Calhan. AcademyACL uses multi-age divisions rather than traditional graded classrooms for a Kindergarten, first/second, third… /fourth, fifth/sixth, and seventh/eighth, or Divisions I through V collection. The school uses an Orientation period at the beginning of the year to set homeroom learning groups and school culture expectations and to complete assessments in reading, writing, and math so that those learning groups can begin by the start of September. Students are placed into Art of Language (reading/writing) and World of Math (kindergarten through high school level) classes regardless of their age or division; those classes run simultaneously throughout the entire building so that students may move to their level. Students participate in Encore classes that provide opportunities to explore Art, Music (including musical composition, Taiko drums, and handbells), Spanish, Theatre, Physical Education, and Technology, including coding and robotics. Teachers receive continuous training and support around the needs of gifted learners, including social-emotional needs, differentiation strategies, and talent identification. All students have access to gifted education strategies, including the flexible skill grouping of Language Arts and Math classes, regardless of whether formal identification of gifted educational needs has occurred. After-school enrichment includes middle school sports, Taiko drumming, Choir, Theatre, and other yearly offerings based on student interest and availability.
