Discovery Magnet school is 27J's first K-8 magnet school. We are a science focused magnet school utilizing the Problem Based Learning instructional model. We are rooted in the values of Responsibility, Optimism, Connection and Kindness. We work on the three tiered grade model where K-4 is elementary, 5-6 grade is intermediate grades where they chose 2 electives per quarter, and 7/8 is middle school where they have block schedule for core academics, content electives and general electives. Problem Based Learning instructional model teachers design units aligned to state standards where a Driving Question is created and presented to the students. The Driving Question is the central idea of the unit where students learn material to help answer the question. They work colloboratively to answer the question and engage in feedback from peers, teachers and experts in the topic.
