About Attendance in Colorado Schools

Consistent attendance in school matters and provides the best opportunity for students to develop the skills to meet academic expectations and be ready for what's next.

Attendance is one of the earliest indicators of students needing help and if not addressed effectively, can impact students' learning, engagement and potentially whether they stay in or drop out of school.

Working with students as soon as attendance becomes inconsistent provides one of the earliest opportunities to identify and address a student's learning and social and emotional needs.

Colorado reports on three main rates around attendance that can be calculated at the school, district, or state level:

The attendance rate is a broad measure of the percentage of students in attendance. It is calculated using the total student days attended divided by the total student days possible.

The truancy rate is a measure of unexcused absences. It is calculated using the total student days that are unexcused divided by the total student days possible.

The chronically absent rate is a measure that looks at the percentage of students who are chronically absent. A student absent 10% or more of the days enrolled during the school year is chronically absent. All absences are included - unexcused and excused.
