State Board of Education to apply for funding for 'remote learning collectives'

Selection followed review of four ideas submitted by education community

DENVER - The State Board of Education authorized CDE staff to submit an application for the federal Education Stabilization Fund -- Rethink K12 Education Models (ESF-REM) grant to create community-based “remote learning collectives” to support children’s academic needs.

The idea for remote learning collectives was submitted to the board following its Call for Ideas issued on May 27 to the Colorado education community. The board requested ideas for remote learning models that could improve student outcomes.

The board received and considered four ideas during a blind review in which the authors were anonymous. According to the criteria for the federal grant, applications must create, develop, implement, replicate, or take to scale field-initiated educational models for high-quality remote learning opportunities.

The board selected a back-up idea to create a system that would provide students with access to a wide variety of online courses plus hybrid or in-person courses should remote learning collectives be found to be in conflict with grant requirements that prohibit subgrants.

Applications are due to the U.S. Department of Education by Monday, June 29.
