News Release -- ESSA Listening tour to visit Durango and Greeley

ESSA Listening Tour to visit Durango and Greeley

Colorado education officials to travel to seven sites to gather feedback about how state should implement national education law

Durango and Greeley will be the next stops on the Colorado Department of Education’s seven-city listening tour to gather feedback on how the state should implement key areas of the nation’s new education law, Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

The new law that was passed in 2015 with bipartisan support reauthorizes the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act and replaces the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act, giving states more authority to chart their own courses.

The listening tour is an opportunity for the public to engage and help shape Colorado’s ESSA strategy. Sessions will include discussion about standards and assessments, accountability, supports for students and parents and community engagement.

Meetings will pose high-level questions, such as:

  • How should we set expectations for what students should know and be able to do?
  • How should we measure student progress toward meeting the standards?
  • How should we hold schools accountable for student outcomes?

Teams comprised of CDE staff will be on hand to give an overview of the education law and what is expected from Colorado before gathering feedback from the public. Each stop will include two sessions, one in the afternoon and another one in the evening. Educators, parents, community members, business owners are all encouraged to participate.

Here is the information about the coming meetings:

  • Durango, Thursday, May 12, Durango School District Board Room, 201 E. 12th St., 1-4 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m.
